Back In Time: Mrs. Olive Egbers left her mark on the early days of Fremont County

Born in 1875 in Missouri, Egbers moved to Ca'on City with her family, which had moved to the area in the 1870s, as her father, Jesse R. Wright, sought permanent relief from his asthma. Ca'on City was just the ticket with its warm, dry weather, and Egbers remained in the area for the rest of her life. "Mrs. Egbers likes to tell of their arrival. There were three other children besides her. They had been suffering from attacks of influenza " then called la grippe " and two of the children had whooping cough," read a Daily Record article from 1961. Royal Gorge Promenaders bring love of square dancing back to Fremont County

Square-dancing, which was recently voted an official Fremont County folk dance at the March 11 County Commissioners meeting, originates in many foreign dances, such as the English country dance, French quadrille, and Scottish reel. The Royal Gorge Promenaders, who formally re-founded the organization late last year, is the pivotal organization that brought a true square dancing club back to Fremont County. Ballots go out Monday across Fremont County for 2025 election

Fremont County Clerk and Recorder Justin Grantham said this year's election will focus primarily on local races, though voters will also weigh in on two statewide ballot measures. Residents of'Ca'on City'and'Florence'will participate in their bi-annual city council elections. Voters living within city limits will have the opportunity to elect mayors and city council members, depending on their district. Notably, Ca'on City's District 3 race will feature no named candidates on the ballot, but certified write-in candidates are eligible.
